After spending long hours sitting at my desk writing research reports for clients in the Telecom Industry I searched, without success, for a comfortable seat cushion for my office chair. There were many expensive seat cushions for wheelchairs, but nothing that people could really afford without insurance. The office based ergonomic movement was in full force in the late 90’s and gel wrist rests and mouse pads were popular and affordable, so it seemed like a good idea to make an affordable gel seat cushion.
After collaborating with Designworks USA (a BMW owned company http://www.designworksusa.com) and a bike seat manufacturer, the first GSeat prototype was created in late 2000. Jason Langston designed the handle after working with the first prototype and our patent for the integrated handle and foldable design was awarded on January 5, 2005 (Utility patent 6,839,928).
We started Gelco Products in our garage and sold GSeats at Corporate Health Fairs until we landed our first catalog customer…once we made it into our first nationwide catalog, it was much easier to get our message out.
Now, almost 20 years later, we are sold all over the world and are the only seat cushion on the Stanford University Approved List of Ergonomic Products, we have been awarded the SkyMall/USA Today Reader’s Choice Top Ten Award for best road trip accessories and we are one of the longest running items in the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog. We own patents and trademarks in the US, South Korea and China.
