Henry Ford said you can buy a Model T, in any color, as long as it is black. That is quite a mandate, but it was backed up by a lead in design. Not just product design, but manufacturing design. Ford is credited with creating previously unrealized economies of scale, by designing the production of his Model T, with assembly lines. This simple maneuver, enabled Ford to create a car that was available for mass consumption, as long as consumers liked black.
Simple innovations expressed in equally simple designs, continue to improve lives and product engagement. It is amazing to look around at how our lives are affected by product design intended to create engagement with users. Then, equally amazing, is to look out over a production plant, at how these products go from drawing board to your hands.
If you have a minute and cannot find something to binge on Netflix or Hulu, I suggest checking out OBJECTIFIED, by Gary Hustwit. It is an engaging documentary that looks at product design and those credited with being leaders in it.
